Answer

Can WhatsApp Backups Use Google Account Storage?

MEMapiance Editorial Team ·Updated Oct 2, 2026·2 min read

WhatsApp backup storage is part of the same Google Account quota used by services such as Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Google also notes that deleting a backup does not turn off future backups.

Quick answer

Yes. Google states that WhatsApp backups on Android count toward your Google Account storage.

yes

The answer

Yes. On Android, Google says WhatsApp backups count toward Google Account storage.

Why

Google includes Android WhatsApp backups in the account's storage usage and provides storage-management tools for reviewing or deleting those backups.

When it is usually OK

  • The backup is an Android WhatsApp backup stored through the Google Account.
  • The backup appears in Google's WhatsApp backup management.

When you should not

  • Deleting a Google-stored WhatsApp backup does not by itself stop future backups.
  • The rule here is specifically about WhatsApp backups on Android.

Risks and exceptions

  • WhatsApp backups use part of the same Google Account storage pool used by other Google services.
  • Google says deleting a WhatsApp backup is permanent, and a new backup can appear again if backup settings are not changed.

Best practice

Review the WhatsApp backup in Google One storage management. If the goal is to keep the backup from returning at the same size, change WhatsApp backup settings before deleting the existing Google backup.

Alternatives

  • Exclude videos from future WhatsApp backups, as Google recommends for reducing backup size.
  • Delete an existing WhatsApp backup through Google One storage management after changing the relevant backup settings.
