Can You Recover a Deleted ChatGPT Conversation?

The answer

No. OpenAI states that a deleted saved chat cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support. Before assuming deletion, check whether the conversation was archived or is simply hard to find with Search.

Why

OpenAI says deleted saved chats are removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to stated security or legal exceptions. It also explicitly says you cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through Support. Archived chats are different: they remain saved and searchable.

When you should not

• The conversation was actually deleted using Delete or Delete all chats.
• You are relying on an old search result after deletion; OpenAI says this does not restore the chat.

Risks and exceptions

• Deleting is not the same as archiving. A chat hidden from the normal sidebar may still exist if it was archived.
• Workspace retention policies can remove chats independently in managed environments.

Best practice

Before concluding that a chat is deleted, search for it and check Archived chats. If you confirm it was deleted, treat it as unrecoverable and use any separate copy, export or notes you already have.

Alternatives

• Search for the conversation if you are not sure it was deleted.
• Check Settings > Data controls > Archived chats.
• Use any previously saved export or external copy if one exists.
